My movie star aspirations

Posted 05-26-2009 at 11:05 AM by Stephen
Yes, the title is a fake, I am definitely not going to be a movie star...

but, I figured it'd be a nice hook, a little, "what the heck is Stephen talking about?" kind of ploy...

Here's the deal...
I don't like to talk about my life and what not more than I need to (it takes too long, is too annoying etc).. but I just need a sounding bored, a public announcement, a means to put all of these thoughts down into text/print...
to look at it all and decide.. is this really how it should go?

hmmm

well.. it started like this..
My wife (Deanna) graduated college a year ahead of me at Ohio State University (we were not married at the time).. she moved to Texas (just north of Dallas) to attend the University of North Texas for her Masters, we spent a year apart, but no big deal, I was to move down once she had completed her first year (and I had completed my schooling)...

She is a music performance major (clarinet)
and I have a degree in Music Education.

So, we have limited job choices

Anyway, before I moved down, I proposed, she accepted and we planned for marriage that following summer.

I now live in Texas with her, and for the first year, was a substitute teacher at the local school district and worked nights (read, 3am-8am) at UPS

The UPS job was near torture
and subbing was almost as bad.

She finished her Masters that year, and decided to take a year off of school.

We got married as planned that summer (May 31, 2008) =)

This past year, I got lucky enough to get an Aide position in a Special Ed classroom... this was a break, as it meant I could quit the night job at UPS

However, it is still only a stopgap as the pay is not incredible.

Luckily, Deanna was able to build up a Clarinet Studio of Middle School students in order to teach lessons

so... we didn't make no money
just not enough...

I have applied for every single *explicitive* Music Ed position available, I even got certified in Middle School math, to widen my spectrum...

but I don't even get phone calls or emails in response..

no interviews.. nothing..

So... here's the rub..

we are coming up on our first year anniversary (this Sunday)

we are lacking money

and... our best option is....

Enlisting in the US Navy Band
go to one of our top 3 choices that has vacancies in both Trumpet and Clarinet

and see where that takes us for the next 4 years

Quote:
Top choices.
1. Naples, Italy
2. Norfolk, Va
3. Chicago, Ill or Pearl Harbor

Other possible locales include most Navy Bases

Any ideas?
In the end.. being in the Navy Band means

-Steady pay for 4 years
-Loan forgiveness
-Playing experience (which looks good for potential jobs in the future)
-being on a coast

it does not mean
-picking up a gun and potentially dying for ones country
