Reasons why "The Conduit" might be the best FPS for this generation.

1. The most important part of any game is a developer that wants to make the best product possible. No shortcuts.
I do not think High Voltage will take any shortcuts and will try to make the best FPS for the Wii.
2. Fresh ideas. Most sequels are terrible because the developer does not change any of the ideas. They just recycle stale ideas to make a new game. Halo 3 is terrible because it does not introduce anything great to the game. Halo is a great game, but Halo 3 is old. Games are like cake, fresh cake is delicious, but stale cake is nasty.
"The Conduit" is a new game with many fresh ideas that will make this game awesome.
3. FPS have been around so long nothing new can be added, but reinventing previous ideas will make for new awesome games. Call of Duty 4 reinvented so many parts of the FPS and it shows. I think Call of Duty 4 is the only great FPS to be released since "Red Faction".
When I first saw a screen shot of "The Conduit" I thought it looked like another "Half-Life" clone. We do not need another one of those. However, other screen shots look like ideas taken from Halo. Combining Half-Life with Halo is a great idea because they will blend nicely to create a new product.
4. All FPS have to have a quality online service. This is a requirement and not optional. Halo 3 has a terrible online service that automatically finds opponents and always ends up with the same map and weapons over and over again. Every cycle also includes one match of missile only fighting which is annoying. What is with this auto finding opponent crap? Why even make a FPS without any online service?
If "The Conduit" does borrow ideas from "Medal of Honor: Heroes 2" online service, it will be great. No friend codes, All games and opponents in the games are shown before joining and No Lag (depending on connection speed).
5. Controls that work. After playing PC FPS for years I cannot go back to dual analogue. Dual Analogue controls are slower than molasses in January. This is a fact and not an opinion. Imagine using your PC with a dual analogue controller. Instead of just pointing to an icon and clicking it, you would have to wait for the cursor to move to it. The mouse is faster and that is why we operate computers with mice and not controllers.
Even though the Wiimote is not as fast as mouse controls, it is still faster than Dual Analogue. Add in the superior controls for zooming in with a sniper rifle and the speed difference is night and day. I doubt "The Conduit" will have PC quality controls, but they will be much faster than any other console FPS controls.
6. Weapons that are fun to use. "Red Faction" and "Quake II" introduced many of the best weapon selections in a FPS. A great weapon selection can make or break a game. I never liked the weapon selection in Half-Life or Half-Life 2. I always felt under equipped and out of ammunition.
By using the weapon ideas from "Halo" I think "The Conduit" will have a huge and awesome selection of weapons. The weapons will not be so powerful that the game is easy nor under powered that you have to constantly conserve ammunition. Even though you cannot waste ammunition, you can use a few extra bullets here and there.
7. No Noob Autoheal. Why are so many FPS made with Autoheal? It makes the single player game super easy and multiplayer games annoying. I get really annoyed constantly chasing down opponents who always run away after be shot. It is also annoying to lose a match, but when you go to reengage the person has completely healed. It is much easier to dominate a game of "Halo 3" or "Medal of Honor: Heroes 2" than "Counter Strike". Autoheal is too noobish and should be optional of left in
I am keeping my fingers crossed "The Conduit" will go back to make more difficult FPS and get away from the Noobish Autoheal system.
8. Extra features I just like to see in FPS not seen frequently.
......A Pulling pins from the grenade. grenades become a more formidable weapon when the pin can be removed before throwing it. Grenades are extremely useless when they have to be thrown and take several seconds to detonate.
......B Sprint features allow the character to run faster for a few seconds. It is a nice feature that makes stalking more difficult. It also adds more strategy to the game.
......C The ability to destroy the environment in real time. (Not included in "The Conduit")
I do not think High Voltage will take any shortcuts and will try to make the best FPS for the Wii.

The Wii pointing system is still pretty great for shooting. I'm sick of that analouge control..

I agree with you on all of this, especially the choice to pull odd grenade pins. It adds more depth into the weapon, and if you nail the timing, can blow up in mid-air.
This is actually one of the reasons why I love Doom3 and Half-Life 2. They both have those features. And I can't wait for this game! Nice blog. |

Even though "The Conduit" seems to have the best graphics of any Wii game, I do not care about graphics. I am impressed with the superior controls, creative single player campaign, MOH: Heroes 2 type online support and customizable HUD. The improved graphics are nice, but not a big deal.
