With Sony's Move due out on September 19 and Microsoft's Kinect not far behind, the motion-control war is nearly upon us. But while we sincerely hope these motion-based peripherals are truly a thing of the future, gaming's past is littered with failed attempts to take the buttons out of play. Grab a joystick before proceeding -- we get the feeling you're going to need it.

1. Power Glove -- NES

Nintendo might be the current king of motion-control, but they spent years as the court jester thanks to the awful (and awesome) Power Glove. While it looked like all kinds of cheesy fun, its rickety motion-control tech barely worked. Making matters worse, only two games specifically built for the Glove were ever released, quickly turning it into more of a failed curiosity than a must-have. Its one credit? Spawning the so-bad-it's-good Fred Savage flick, "The Wizard."

2. Joyboard -- Atari 2600

Amiga was responsible for this odd Atari 2600 peripheral, which let players control a game by shifting their weight, much like the Wii Balance Board. Trouble is, it worked with just one game -- Mogul Maniac -- which was forgotten just as quickly as this revolutionary device.

3. U-Force - NES

It might earn huge style points for its Star Wars-meets-laptop look, but make no mistake: the U-Force was a total bust. Players would wave their hands to interact with infrared beams criss-crossing the controller's field, which sounds super cool. Unfortunately, all the force in the world couldn't get gamers to buy into its broken gimmick.

4. Power Pad -- NES

A decade before Dance Dance Revolution kickstarted the exergaming craze, Nintendo gave gamers the Power Pad. Too bad gamers weren't quite ready to shape up. Boasting 12 pads for players to stomp on, the gizmo was definitely ahead of its time, but a lack of compelling software sent it to an early grave.

5. Sega Activator -- Sega Genesis

Excited about Kinect's promise of controller-free gaming? Heed this word of warning: Activator. Released as an add-on for the Sega Genesis, the octagonal pad used infrared beams to read your movements, which mostly involved punching and kicking at thin air. Sadly, it barely worked, leading to immediate deactivation by disgruntled gamers.

6. Konami Laserscope - NES

Featuring voice-activated control that seemed to constantly malfunction, the Laserscope was a bad idea from the start. Still, the fact that gamers were supposed to strap this goofy gun to the top of their heads at least freed up their hands to do other things...such as picking up the phone and calling the store to ask for a refund.

7. Roll ‘n Rocker - NES

Everyone loves Rock 'n Roll, but no one loves the Roll 'n Rocker. Essentially a large plastic board sitting on a slightly smaller plastic ball, the rickety device was intended to act as a giant D-pad. Instead, it terrified those trying to balance on it -- and with a 100 lb. weight limit, it mostly just terrified children.

8. The Glove - PS One

Eight years after the Nintendo Power Glove made a mockery out of motion-control, along came Reality Quest and their creatively named "The Glove" peripheral for the original Playstation. Covered in confusing buttons but boasting full-on analog motion-control, it failed to resonate with gamers, partly because they were just coming to grips with the excellent Playstation controller. The other reason? It sucked.

Well, i'm a huge fan of the walking dead (american zombie comic book if you didn't know) and and now thats its being made into a show on AMC (check it out this halloween) i've been thinking, hmm, we need a good zombie game, no, not like resident evil with chessy dialouge and crazy action and terrible story, so I ask myself why hasn't there been an open world zombie game been made yet. Heres my idea. The game itself for the most part would take place in first person but would take place in a huge map like fallout 3, except there would be cities, towns and fields and so on, also weapons would be hard to come by and sometimes the best thing would even to be to try to avoid zombie detection, it would be a post apocalptic so food would be scarce and you would have to scavenge for food to regain health and/or stamina and even kill other peopel just to survive.

Also, through out the game you would come across other suriviors that you could befriend and have them join your party, build relation ships or enemies, characters that you truly care whether they live or die. They would join or threaten your party, and thats one thing that would make the game intersting, because zombies could be predictable where people aren't. People would really become disturbed after an apocalypse therefore probably develop psycological problems, survival would mean everything and trust would have to be earned and so on.

I'm pretty tired, I'll add more to this tomorrow, but my main idea for this is because, I think a game like this would be hugely successful and fun to play if they done it right, as long as there was great emotion to the characters you came across and you actually cared about them unlike just bout every character I came across in fallout 3, I killed just about every one I came across with no mercy in that game, giggady.

It's safe to say that the game announcement rush before the Tokyo Game Show kicks off September 16 is well underway. Square Enix's contribution today: The first word on a Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy Legend III, a classic RPG released for the black-and-white Game Boy in 1993.

Titled SaGa 3: Shadow or Light in Japanese, the DS remake follows in the footsteps of the Final Fantasy Legend II remake Square Enix released in Japan last year -- a remake that's sadly yet to see an English release.
The original 2D RPG is getting a full 3D remake, replete with new cutscenes and the like, but the basic plot is the same: you guide a rabble of four youths as they skip across time to stop a divine water spirit from engulfing the world.
The remake is due out this winter in Japan, with no US release announced yet.

Mine was the deadrising infinity mode. The time goes by sooooo slow and in order to get anything good, you need to survive 5 and even 7 days! All while keeping your health up because in THAT mode, you can die of hunger!

There's also creating the skatepark in skate 3 which I won't even get into.

Now i usually never think about this stuff much,
but most of us can agree that a girl that plays video games is pretty hot, although it is hard to find one i was thinking through earlier since i was epicly bored what games can make a girl play video games.

So i decided to think a few and i'd like some suggestions as well, hell this is for those who actually wanna get their Girlfriends to play games.
I for one am lucky on that one but maybe not others

i will put a few of the games i thought in order of like starting to being more or a lil more srs

feel free to put some up too that u think can get your girlfriends, your bestfriend or whatnot that is a girl ofcourse to play videogames.

#7 Wii Fit

Wii all know this game, you're in this community because 95% of people have a wii. Now what better way to get your girl to play videogames with an easy to play game and get your girl doing yoga and other stuff. The minigames are cool and are enjoyable i have seen this first hand and they really do enjoy it and come back for more, one of my friends liked it so much she got up every morning and played wii fit. It is a small step to more maybe hardcore games but hey seems worth it to me.

Also u sometimes get a nice bonus on seeing this kind of stuff

#6 Nintendogz

A lot of girls like dogs a lot... This game automatically catches their woman instincts it just screams must play to them. I can't say much really on this since it was made specifically for girl gamers and getting their attention and ofc how innovative and new it was for it's time for the DS. This is another game that will take small steps if you really want her to be more srs about gaming but i think it is worth it.

#5 Mario kart Wii/MKDS

i recommend both equally, sure mkwii can be a little bit more rough but i know quite a few girls that can maintain 9000 vr or more and they only play mkwii or other games i mentioned in this list so if they can do it so can other girls. This is a very good game for fun and get raped together same with mkds easy to control and get good at, i recommend this game after your gf is more into games a lil more.

#4 Clubhouse Games

Clubhouse Games serves up 42 different parlor games that practically anyone can pick up and play. It has dominoes, solitaire, poker, memory, blackjack, checkers, chinese checkers, connect 4, connect 5, chess, man i can go on seriously.
Dude this is easy to pick up and if your gf is into table games or stuff like that she will enjoy this trust me even my mom plays this game to death when she is doing nothing. Also as an added bonus a lot of the games include online play so even she can enjoy some matches online if she wants too.

#3 Super Mario bros Wii/DS

Simple and addictive and the little mini games that the Ds version brings also addictive. My Sister plays both a lot after she comes from uni these games are just simple and engaging for them. One of my friends she played with me a lot co-op at launch she loved it and my cousins too. i recommend them for your girl.

#2 Super Princess Peach

It is Mario bros with peach. Do i need to say more? a few of my friends has played this game for the sheer fact peach is the main character.

#1 Mario Party ds

This game has 74 minigames and they all are pro. This game is perfect for girls imo easy to play simple and can get competitive between people etc. My last year in high school i remember a lot of my friends bought the game and they all played locally and surprisingly most of the gym girls that were around played it too when they saw it it and they never touched a game in their lives.

This is my short list as you can see i was very bored but ehh

post your lists
i put the ones on top of my head and im sure there are some ps2 games i missed like dance dance
and other etc.

Ever wonder why people get tired of Modern Warfare ?
Well you are doing to find out !

Here are many reasons why :

Camping

Boosting

Noob Tubing

New Maps

    Camping

Camping is a sad why to get killstreaks, instead of camping people should be running around the place or patrolling areas to get kills. Most people i know run around area but , when they try to the get killed because of the Campers , campers are Noobs , campers are rubbish , this shows that the campers are afraid to go out and kill because thery're going to get killed, by camping you do not get better at the game and , you do not learn anything ! Think about other people and how they're feeling because your camping ! So all you people out there that camp to get killstreaks have to put a stop to it ASAP !

Boosting

Boosting is just another sad way to get killstreaks (Nuke).Alot of people find it annoying, but theres only one way to make yourself feel better, forget about the game and keep on killing the boosters, Thats what i do its so funny and fun :)

Noob Tubing

Noob Tubing is really annoying. When people Noob Tube i get so mad that I really want to slap someone, anyway most people noob tube in wasteland and in Terminal-Ground war. Most do it just to annoy people but some people do it to get Danger Close Pro. Think about why people get tired of this game, there are so many reason why they're bored.

New Maps

Some of the New Maps are really annoying and a waste of money like : Crash,OverGrown, Bailout and many more. The to maps that annoy me are Overgrown and crash, too much Camping ! I wish they had ever offered people to buy the maps from the PS3 store, they're so Rubbish ! When Ever I join a match with those maps i leave as soon as the match starts, thats how bad the maps are.

There are times when we compare ourselves to video game characters. We have all done it at some point. Now, who do you think you would be in the gaming universe?
Couple rules though:

-Don't just pick a game character you think is cool. Pick a real logical choice. Personality and if at all applicable, looks.

-Don't just limit it to nintendo! It can be any character from any genre of any game of any company! So don't limit it to mario, zelda, and metroid! Go beyond them.

-and consider more out of the way games too. Like Tekken, street fighter, metal gear, deadrising, even DDR!

So with that, who are ya? I'd have to say megaman myself. Because my favorite colors are blue and cyan, I can mimic my opponent, and I have the same hair.

Okay, Im attempting to purchase a Wii. And I was trying to decide what games would e most useful with wi-fi, and what would be most useful considering this site. Like what games are used in tournaments and such. I have already infered Super Smash Bros.: Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii. I am concerned if I need anything other than games, meaning accesories and such. I have one more spot in my budget for a game, or accesory. Fairly cheap in price would be appreciated. I am not too familiar with Nintendo things (And you would ask: "Why in the heck are you on this sitem then?) The answer to tha tquestion is... I dont really know.

A couple of established fighting franchises enter the arena as one with today's newly announced Street Fighter X Tekken. Announced today by Capcom at Comic-Con 2010, Street Fighter X Tekkenbrings the characters of both Capcom's and Namco Bandai Games' fighting games into one versus game, presented in the recent illustrated art style of the Street Fighter IV series. This is the first time Tekken characters appear with an illustrated treatment and 2D/3D fighting style. This is also the first time both fighters are in one game. You can spot a few familiar Tekken characters in the trailer and screenshots.

Commenting on the origins of this project Yoshinori Ono said: “This is history we're making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. ****This isn't just a showdown between****Tekken****and****Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. ****So I'm going to give it my all.”

****SAN DIEGO, CA — July 24, 2010****— Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games today announced that****Street Fighter X Tekken****is in development for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360®****video game and entertainment system from Microsoft®. The title will make history as fighters from these two bastions of the fighting genre come together for the very first time.****

Utilizing the same technology that powered****Street FighterTM****IV****&****Super Street FighterTM****IV,TekkenTM****characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams will make the transition into theStreet FighterTM****universe having been re-imagined using the much-loved art style of these seminal titles; while retaining their unique characteristics and signature moves as they go head-to-head with classic brawlers from the****Street Fighter****franchise in what promises to be the ultimate match up.

Two more characters revealed for Capcom's massively anticipated crossover fighting game sequel.

Yesterday, Capcom revealed four more characters for Marvel vs. Capcom 3's roster: Chun Li, Trish, Doctor Doom, and Super-Skrull. Today it looks like Marvel accidentally leaked a couple more characters as well, and they're no less than two otherworldly mythological figures: The Mighty Thor and Okami's wolf goddess Amaterasu.

The duo appeared in a few images on Marvel's official Marvel vs. Capcom 3 gallery, as spotted by NeoGAF. Checking out the gallery now shows no sign of said images, but as you can see in the screen above, they clearly existed at one point and the presence of Amaterasu and Thor is pretty clear.
Thor seems an obvious choice, considering he's one of the more well-known Marvel superheros and he also has a new movie coming out next year (not bad for an outcast of Asgard). Amaterasu is a little more surprising, consider she was the main character of a cult PS2 game that came out four years ago, and that she's, well, a wolf.
Then again, Capcom is also working on Okamiden, a semi-sequel to Okami for the DS, so it appears no character is ever niche enough for Capcom to forgo cross-promotional synergy.

"It has been talked about for quite some time, but EA has finally shown off some assets from the sequel to the cult classic American McGee's Alice,...

"It has been talked about for quite some time, but EA has finally shown off some assets from the sequel to the cult classic American McGee's Alice, called Alice: Madness Returns. At a press event earlier today, EA described the game as an action adventure, with the very broad release window of 2011.

Alice: Madness Returns takes place 10 years after the conclusion of the original game, with Alice struggling to recover from the emotional trauma of losing her entire family in a fatal fire. After spending a decade institutionalized in an insane asylum, she is finally released to the care of a psychiatrist who just may be able to help her conquer the nightmarish hallucinations that still haunt her. Alice embarks on a mission to root out the true cause of her family's mysterious death, jumping from a gloomy and stark London to a rich and provocative Wonderland.

There is a teaser trailer, some screenshots, an official site, and that's pretty much it. This is certainly a case of a creative team taking something that was already dark and twisted and making it slightly more dark and twisted, but the original game is still talked about fondly. Check out the official site for a brief trailer, and you can gaze upon a few screenshots to make the wait a little more tolerable."

There was a lot of back and forth on the release timeframe for the latest Zelda title leading up to E3, but when Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the game as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, he also revealed the disappointing news that it wouldn't be ready for release until 2011. But speaking to Official Nintendo Magazine, producer Eiji Aonuma now says they're aiming for an early 2011 release.

"The basis we have now is very, very solid," Aonuma said. "Early 2011 -- that is what we're aiming for." Sadly Aonuma didn't get any more specific than that, nor did he reveal any new details about the game itself (or if he did, Official Nintendo Magazine isn't passing them on yet).

Often times games slated for "early" in a year get released in the last quarter of a publisher's fiscal year, which would mean between January and the end of March. But again, Aonuma didn't mention any specific time-frame, so that's just speculation for now (and perhaps a little bit of wishful thinking).
In the meantime, for more on Skyward Sword, check out our hands-on impressions from E3 back in June

For nearly two decades, elected officials have tried to regulate which video games you can buy, rent and play. Every single time they’ve passed a law, the federal courts have struck it down as unconstitutional. But this may change this fall.

It only takes a few seconds to speak out, Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA): Speak out and fight for your rights!

The Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear the State of California’s infamous ‘violent video game case,’ Schwarzenegger v. EMA. That means that this year, or early next, the Court is going to decide whether to agree with the lower federal courts or not. Agreeing would mean that they believe that video games are, and should continue to be, First Amendment protected speech; just like books, movies and music. The court disagreeing would mean that they think video games should be treated differently. This could lead to new bills and laws curtailing video game access in states across the country.

Join others in signing The Gamer Petition, Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA): Speak out and fight for your rights!

It is no exaggeration to state that their hearing represents the single most important moment for gamers, and the pivotal issue for gaming, in the sector’s history.

Source

Fellow gamers, our right to play is being threatened! Sign the petition and let the government know that our games have as much right to be protected under the First Amendment as books, movies, and music!

All of us have been there. There was that point in a game that made you go HUH?!? or just plain WTF? Or a moment you never expected. This thread is about that moment you've had. It can be about the game itself, the game system, plot twists, a certain cutscene in the game, or if you just heard about it, and made you think "why is it this game?"

Mine is when I first played my import of to love ru. (actually, I didn't import it myself, I just found it on the floor of a hotel hallway and figured what the hell? And took it with me) To love ru is an ECCHI anime, involving.....perverted things. This made me go WTF? A to love ru game? J....just look up to love ru gameplay for DS on youtube.

There was also my unexpected ending at the bowser fight in NSMBW. I stomp the button, hear the music, and celebrate on a job well done.

THEN the music stops. Turns around, its kamek disguised as peach! Oh damn it!

Miis have starred in some of the most popular games on Wii and now the user-generated characters are being considered for 3DS according to Shigeru Miyamoto

The Miis made their debut in Wii Sports in 2006 and have appeared in Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii but until now their solitary appearance on a handheld has been in the DS fitness title Walk With Me. However, as Miyamoto told IGN, that could be about to change.

"We need to keep in mind how we evolve the Miis and how we think about compatibility with Miis between different systems, but that's something that we're definitely giving consideration to and want to continue to try to allow people to use their Miis on different Nintendo systems going forward," he said.

So will we see a Mii in Mario Kart 3DS?

Ubisoft has revealed that Episode One of Rayman Origins is currently planned to be out in time for Christmas, giving old school fans a platforming treat to keep them warm during the Winter holidays. The rest of the episodes will follow on XBLA and PSN throughout 2011.

In addition to the console digital releases, it's also been revealed that other platforms, including the 3DS, are being considered. Since this is Ubisoft we're talking about, "considered" most likely means that there are definite plans in place.

Rayman Origins is something of a "back to basics" title, removing the Rabbids and taking the limbless hero back to his 2D platforming heyday. Great news for retro fans, bad news for Rabbid fans. Sucks to be them.

Anyone happy that this might come to the 3DS??

Alpha Protocol apparently performed too poorly to receive a sequel, but developer Obsidian won't be put down. In fact, it wants to get involved with Chrono Trigger, arguably one of the most beloved RPG names of all time. Apparently, the studio was in talks with Square Enix regarding a game, so this is a thing that might happen.

“We were talking to Square for quite awhile,” says CEO Feargus Urquhart. “You make RPGs, we make RPGs, it would be great to see what we could do together. And they really wanted to start getting into Western RPGs. And, so it kind of all ended up fitting together.”

Obsidian is currently making Dungeon Siege 3 for Square Enix and I simply hope it fares better than Alpha Protocol did. You know, in that I hope it's actually good. While we wait to see how that game fares, what would you say to an Obsidian-developed Chrono Trigger? Would that even work, do you think?

Destructoid.com - For Gamers. By Gamers. *

Any thoughts about this??
I never got along to play the original Chrono Trigger but i read awesome reviews about it. Practically THE best SNES game out there.

You guys think these people will make it work?

Nintendo senior managing director Shigeru Miyamoto has created some of the biggest characters in gaming, including Mario, Donkey Kong, and Link. In a Q&A session at Nintendo's general shareholders meeting this week, the designer told investors he is looking to add at least one more name to his considerable resume.

According to a GameSpot translation of Nintendo's transcript of the event, Miyamoto was asked to share details on new projects. He replied that he hasn't had much time to slow down and think about new projects with 3DS development ramping up. However, he has found that deadlines sometimes cause new ideas to "glitter," so conditions might be right at the moment for something new.

"It's been nearly 10 years since the creation of Pikmin," Miyamoto said. "I think this coming year, it's about time a new character be created."

Speaking of Pikmin, Miyamoto also addressed a new installment in that series, something he first acknowledged working on at Nintendo's E3 2008 developer roundtable event. He said that development on the project is proceeding well, but he added he needs to finish it soon. At an E3 2010 roundtable, he reassured reporters it remains in the works.

Pikmin featured a diminutive alien stranded on earth, marshalling the forces of sentient plants to help him repair his spaceship. It was famously inspired by Miyamoto's gardening hobby at the time. Perhaps giving some clue as to his next effort, the developer said at the shareholder's meeting that his current hobby is swimming, and it has him very active working with youth in the community.

List your top 5 most annoying video game characters ever. Mine are:

1. Navi- hey link listen hey watch out! Link hey listen heyheyheyheyheyhey *swings fist* GET BACK HERE YOU LITTLE BLUE PIECE OF CRAP!

2. Slippy- fox I'm under attack! *3 mins later* fox i'm under attack! Me: how the hell did you pass training to become an elite pilot?

3. Chip from sonic unleashed- His voice is the most obnoxious in games coupled with the fact that he won't shut up, he is always hungry for some kind of candy or ice cream and that never helps, and his tutorials are so useless and filled with info you already knew how to do. Ex: desert level-press A in mid-air to do a homing attack! I found that out back in stage 1! So? ITS LEVEL FREAKING 34!

4. The end and eva- MGS3- The end is impossible to find even with a sniper rifle and scares the holy high hell out of you if your shot, and evas stamina goes down in large chunks really fast and you barely can find any good food to keep it up! And even then that doesn't do much good considering how fast the stamina drops! Which is why I ko her and drag her through the level. Don't look at me like that!

5. The blue shell from mario kart-Me: 5 miles ahead, perfectly avoiding all obstacles I've got this one in the...*looks in rear view mirror, sees blue shell, then sees objects in mirror are closer than they appear* BEEP BEEP BEEPBEEPBEEPBEEPBEEP Me: You motherfu....*blue shell blows up, in 9th place* ? There is something alive in that damn thing!

If you watched Nintendo's press conference at this years E3 then you know Nintendo is trying to win back the core crowd in good old Nintendo fashion....

If you watched Nintendo's press conference at this years E3 then you know Nintendo is trying to win back the core crowd in good old Nintendo fashion. Nintendo was sure not to disappoint with their large list of anticipated AAA games coming our way than can put a smile on just about any core gamer's face. It seems Nintendo is finally taking the initiative beyond just releasing the games we have been longing for and looks to improve just about everything. Here they talk about their new commitment to improve the online experiences found on Nintendo systems. An interview with company President Satoru Iwata reveals Nintendo's plans to get finally get serious with the core gaming crowd.

"While Nintendo's focus seemed to be squarely on first-party development, the publisher also stressed that the 3DS would also launch with ample third-party support. The company has now reiterated its aim to better embrace external publishers, with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata telling Japanese news service Nikkei that he intends to work more closely with developers in order to "expand into elaborate games targeting serious gamers".

The wave of third-party titles announced so far for the new Nintendo handheld seem to back up Iwata's statements, with titles like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D - The Naked Sample, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pro Evolution Soccer, Dead or Alive 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man & Galaga, and Dragon Ball would all be coming to the 3DS, as well as a spate of unnamed titles from developers like Harmonix, Take-Two, Atlus, AQ Interactive, Disney Interactive Studios, Hudson Soft, Majesco, Marvelous Entertainment, and Sega.

In the Nikkei interview, Iwata went on to suggest that the current DS and its software only caters to those who do not play games, something that he hoped to rectify with the 3DS in terms of advances in graphics and gameplay. Recognising this shift in focus from first-party to third-party development, Iwata told Nikkei that Nintendo went to great lengths to incorporate software developers' requests when making the 3DS, and called on these developers to make games for the new system.

"These partnerships are good for both Nintendo and the software developers," Iwata said.

Iwata also announced Nintendo's plans to make the successor to the Wii 3D compatible, telling Nikkei that "a full-scale entry into this field will take some time because 3D televisions will not catch on right away."
Source

So it seems the 3DS will only continue to impress and will be a hand held for serious gamers while the original ds can still please the more casual crowd. They want to provide great 1st party games for the 3DS while being backed with some awesome 3rd party support, sounds like a good plan to me. Nintendo also stated that their next home console, the successor to Wii, will have 3D compatibility hinting at many new features being implemented so they can keep up with their competition next generation. Overall Nintendo's attempts are looking good and I can't wait until we see the final products of all this planning.

In an interview with Reggie Fils-aime it was stated that Nintendo knows it is lacking in the area of digital and online features and is looking to improve things with its new commitment. "The online ... or let me state it more broadly, the digital area is an area where we can improve, and we've made a commitment to dramatically improve in that area." Nintendo also stated that their changes won't just follow the models seen in psn and xbox live (their competitors) but will be unique to them and feel very Nintendo. "I can just about guarantee [our plan] is unlike anything that our competitors have done to date. The reason for that is it wouldn't be innovative, it wouldn't be distinctive, and therefore, it wouldn't be Nintendo ... Our approach will be to enable the consumer to discover our digital content much more easily." There is no telling if anything can be done to overhaul the flaws with Wii's online services but I think we can be sure to have better experiences with 3DS and Wii's successor in the online department.
Source
This seems to be part of Nintendo's plan, going back to please the core gaming crowd, and so far I am very pleased. To see info on Nintendo's plans to be more serious moving on take a look: here

Ubisoft has today revealed that it is bringing out a new 2D Rayman title by the name of Rayman Origins. Following the announcement of Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time, the French company has lifted the lid on what most fans were really hoping for, a new Rayman adventure that appears to follow the loose-limbed character's history. Platforms and a release date have yet to be revealed, but it was announced that only a small team of five worked on the intriguing project.
