I've been thinking Lately, as well as the Backwards race tourney (That i will host in the near future) would any of you be interested in a Team race tournament? like, 2v2? this will diversify MKDS tourneys, instead of having non-snaking and snaking tourneys, there can be team, Backwards, and all other sorts.

what do you guys think?

Backward Race Rundown


This Thread is here just to outline the Don'ts of a Backwards Race. In the Tournament section, i see people requesting Mario Kart Ds Backward Races, so this thread my come Helpful.

The key to a successful backwards race is how you start. you need to quickly turn around at the start of a match to gain the upper hand. How quick you do it may determine your fate. if your opponent does it quicker then you, then there is a good chance that he/she will beat you.

This is mainly a Rundown of the Items and Tracks in MKDS. I will go through Each item and State the effect it will have on you while Racing Backwards and also, which Tracks are not Possible during a Backwards Race.

Impossible Tracks while Backward Racing

Some Tracks are just impossible to do while Backward Racing, so it's best not to pick these Tracks whilst on WIFI/Multiplayer. These Tracks included:

Cheep Cheep Beach-This is impossible because at the start of the track, it requires you to go on a Boost to land on the sand below...IMPOSSIBLE because whilst Driving Backwards, the Boost will shoot you Forward, so you can't pass that section

Delfino Square- the Boost on the Bridge will send you forward so it's impossible to pass..unless you want to keep falling in the water DX

Waluigi Pinball- The Beginning requires you to boost into the hole...IMPOSSIBLE... as the boost will send you forward

Airship Fortress- after you pass the bit with all the Bullet bills being shot, there is a boost there taht you can't pass while driving backwards.

Rainbow Road- The loopy boost will shoot you forward so it can't be crossed.

Bowser Castle- Near the end of the Track, the is a boost that shoots you to the moving blocks that are above the Lava, you can't cross the boost in both ways. if you go the rolling log way...you can't cross it, and if you drop down from the rolling log and go the long way...you still can't cross it.

Bowser Castle 2- There is a section in this stage that has a lot of Boost Hops. it will push you forward, and if you try to hop over it, you will fall in the Lava.

Sky Garden- The reason you can't backward race in this stage is exactly the same reason as the reason for Bowser Castle 2.



Item Rundown


some items may cause different effects as you backwards race so read Carefully!
The items:

Red shell(s)- has the normal effect of homing. be warned though, if you are in 2nd place, and you shoot a red shell, the red shell will travel forward for a bit and then come back to hit the opponent infront of you. This red shell may hit you if you get in the way, so be careful.

Green Shell(s)- also has the normal effect, you can shoot these back or forward as you please.

Bannanas- best to shoot these forward because if you lay them behind you, you will slip on this same banana.

Spiny shell- Normal effect

Fake Item Box- same as Banana, shoot these Forward

Mushrooms- your pretty much going to be annoyed if you end up with this item. you know that it will propel you forward if used, and you wouldn't want that. the best plan of action would be to just keep it, or wait till your hit with a Spiny shell, ThunderBolt, or a Boo Hoo...so that the item can drop or be removed from you.
if none of those things occur the best plan of action will be to go in front of wall and use it. this is so that when you use it, the wall will prevent you from going anywhere

Bomb- Shoot these Forward, don't lay these behind you as the will explode on contact

Blooper- Normal Effect

Boo Hoo- Normal Effect

ThunderBolt- Normal effect

Star- Normal effect

Bullet Bill- Has the Normal effect but take into consideration that if you are doing a narrow track, and you are at a place where you can fall easily, you fall if used. What happens is that the Bullet Bill will make a 180 degree Turn so that it can send you in the normal racing direction..so don't use it will on a narrow path with a fall, because of the 180 degree turn. Once it swingsin that 180 degree arc, and you are off the Track, you will fall and the Bullet Bill will disappear.

This Thread is going to be kind of like a Rundown of how to pick your ideal Kart by taking into consideration the stats of each kart.

Speed
Is maximum speed your forte? then maybe karts that have a good maximum speed level are good for you. Speed is an important component when it comes to races as it obviously helps you to win a race. Speed is based on a Karts MAXIMUM speed, this means it's speed when you have held the A button for quite some time without any disruptions like dirt or mud. High-speed Karts are probably THE most important thing to consider when it comes to choosing your perfect Kart. Choose wisely, as different speed Karts have their faults, for example, one high speed car my have high speed and drift but low handling, where as a different car may have high speed with the opposite characteristics. decide Carefully.

Acceleration
Acceleration is based on how long it takes to reach your maximum speed and how fast you recover from being hit e.g a spiny shell and other shells. It is not normal for cars to have VERY high speed and high acceleration, so you would have to generally pick between high acceleration and low speed or high speed and low acceleration. Your recovery is very important and it could make you lose a race. For instance, if your on your last lap and you get hit by a blue shell right before you cross the finish line, someone my sneak up and take first place from you. now if your kart has good acceleration, you will be able to recovery from the hit very quickly to still get first place....bad acceleration would take first place from your hands.

Weight
Heavy? Medium? Light? you pick. you have the choice to pick a heavy light or medium Character or Car. Being Light, Medium or Heavy all yield thier own strengths and weaknesses. Heavy Karts are really good for Knocking people off course in stages like Rainbow road. Medium Karts are all round and small Karts get knocked off easily but are very quick. You will need to experiment with which class of cars your best with.

Handling
Handling determines how easily a Kart can turn. Handling is good for turning around Corners without drifting. Its harder to turn around corners with Karts that have bad Handling..This is most of the time the case with big Karts.

Drift
As most of you know, drifting is mainly used for Powerslides. It is the R button along with the directional buttons that provides the technique for drifting...it is then the added left right left right action that provides powerslides. Some cars are better then others when drifting around corners and with good drifting comes sharper turns.

Another time was when me and some other guy were racing, and I started going backwards, well we all started doing that, and we planted bananas in a m shape. We all started making different shapes with the bananas, and doing a straight line on the track.

Another time was when this one cheater was flying through the air the entire time. I raced as Hermit crab and my emblem had a picture of a hermit crab, and he was holding a lollipop. And I stayed over by the scenery where the grass was, like a homeless person, and would hide in the shadows of the bridge and whenever someone would pass by I'd go chasing after them like a crazy hermit.

I remember one time my name was I am so Sexy! And all these girls were chasing after me! It was paradise! I had a picture of link so it was really funny.

I remember one time this guy wouldnt move while we were racing, and so I threw bombs at him, and he still didnt move, and so he never disconnected but he just thumped once in a while. We did all kinds of things like I ran into him and he still didnt move.

Once in awhile I like doing something called spinning, where you press all buttons at once. Its fun.

Another funny time was when I put michael jackson on my emblem, and stopped and went backwards like I was doing the moonwalk. I did this several times. It was so funny!

This guide is here to help those Mario Kart Ds players that want to achieve a higher level of skill at the game. This guide will pretty much cover all the advanced techniques in the game. Ok, without further delay, lets begin.
First, i will begin with:

*ITEM STRATEGIES/USES*


Each item has their own use in the game. It is up to us players to experiment with these items to deduce a productive use for it. Although some of these uses for the items that i mention may be obvious, some people normally forget the basics during competative play, so i'm here to remind you. Items that are not listed here are items that do not really have a specific strategy...you just use them.

Triple Bannanas/Bannana
Defensive uses-Bannanas are probably the most common item in the game. A good use of it as a defensive mechanism is to stick it and hold it behind your kart. This will prevent any green or red shells hitting you on a straight pathway. *TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THAT THE RED SHELL MAY HIT YOU ON THE SIDE OF YOUR KART WHILST TURNING*

Offensive uses-If you are close to an adjacent opponent, drifting into them with the bannana(s) may be the best course of action. laying them behind items boxes may be a wise idea, as your opponents can't obviously see what is behind item boxes.



Triple Green shells/Green shell
Defensive uses-The defensive uses for these items are much the same for the bannanas. You can also use these Green shells to shoot at bannanas that stand in you way whilst driving, if it is too late to try to avoid them

Offensive uses-Again, pretty much the same as the Bannanas, you can drift into your opponent with these.




Triple Red shells/Red shell
Defensive uses-Now, red shells are homing, so will not have a great use in shooting items that you might hit, if there is an opposing Kart near you. the best uses of the red shell as a defensive mechanism may be to keep it at your back whilst you drive for the single red shells, And for the triple red shells, let them revolve around you as you drive

Offensive uses-The red shells are a good item to use on far opponents as it homes onto the kart that is ahead of you. If you have Triple red shells, a wise idea would be to shoot them one at a time if your opponent is far to kill their speed and to bring you closer to them. you will know when you have hit with one because your driver will make a little cheer, that indicates that you have hit. try to spread out the interval in which you shoot the shells. Also try to mak them get hit consecutively, one shell after the other. in order to do this, you will need to predict the timing of shooting the next shell.




Fake item Box
Defensive uses-The defensive uses of this item is pretty much the same as that of the bannana. Although they can't block you from Green and red shells like the way the Bannanas do

Offensive uses-Drifting into your opponent while holding the fake item box at your back is one way of using it. But generally, what most players like to do with the fake item box is stick it directly onto the space where item boxes are so that the opponents can be confused. Using this fake item box around sharp corners is another great item because you can't see around corners.



Triple Mushrooms/Gold Mushroom/Mushrooms
Defensive uses-tired of being knocked down all the time by Bigger/Heavier karts? well, any one of these items can be used to protect you. when you see a big kart trying to knock you down and you have any one of these itmes, as soon as they get close to you, boost away. This will send you straight forward while knocking the other kart away, which may even knock them down at a track like Rainbow road.

Offensive uses-Any one of these items can be used to knock you opponent of that cliff or edge. just make sure to time it right, as your opponent might be trying to pre-empt what your trying to do


ThunderBolt
Defensive uses-The Thunderbolt can be used to pre-empt any oncoming attacks. when you posses a Thunderbolt, look down at the bottom screen. If you see any unpleasant items that your opponent may have such as a red shell or a Blue shell that you don't what to get hit by, just quickly use the Thunderbolt before they shoot thier item. This will shrink them causing thier item to be knocked off.

Offensive uses-Again, use as an offensive device requires you to look at the bottom screen. Change the map layout on the bottom screen so that you can see where every Kart is. Just use the Thunderbolt when its inconveinient for your opponents. like when they are on a narrow road in rainbow road..so that they can spin off course, or when they are in the air in Sky garden so that they fall.



Star
Defensive uses-The Star is a great Defensive item that can be used in many ways. It can be used to avoid being hit by a Blue/Red shell and can be used to prevent people knocking you off the cliff.

Offensive uses-This item can be used to knock your opponents off course.



Boo Hoo
Defensive uses-Great mechanism of defense as it turns you invisible. this makes you impervious to Blue/red shell assualts

Offensive uses*Funny use*-When an opponent is next to you, and they acquire a mushroom, you probably know that thier intention is to knock you down. This can be avoided with the Boo Hoo. As soon as they use thier mushroom, use the Boo Hoo, so instead of them knocking you down, they go through you and drop themselves

Who can you challenge? / How to rank up?


If a ranked person loses to a challenger, that person who lost, and every other ranked person below them, drops down 1 rank. If the ranked person wins, that person gets one win added to his/her scoreboard.

So, if Person D challenges Person A for Person A's Rank 10, and Person D wins Rank 10, then Person A drops to Rank 11, and whoever was Rank 11 drops to Rank 12. By the way, Rank 25 will have to give up his/her spot for Rank 24.

Set up the rules with your opponent via Pm, profile comment, etc. Also, if the result is a tie, its a draw and I won't change your ratio/score.

Steps to challenge someone:

1a) Challenge them via PM, profile comment AND this thread. Make sure that they know that you're challenging them! So post your challenge here then PM and comment him/her so he/she knows you are challenging him/her!

1b) If that person has already been challenged and you challenge them after that person, then you must wait until that challenge has been done with.also if there is 3 challenges in the waiting you must wait until one challenge is done. Max challenge=3.

1c) If the person who you have challenged lost the match against the other challenger who challenged him/her before you, then you can no longer challenge that person for his/her spot, since the spot has already been taken by the person before you.

1d) If the person who you have challenged won the match against a previous challenger, then simply challenge that person after the match is done.

1e) New: If you challenge someone, and your challenge has been denied for any reason, then you automatically win the spot. If you have a personal reason for denying someone's challenge, please talk to me about it first.

2) Once a ranked person on the list has been challenged, they must race within 7 days. If neither person is active within 7 days, then the challenge disappears. If the challenger is active and the opponent isn't, the challenger wins the spot. If the opponent is active and the challenger isn't, the challenge disappears.

3) PM me after your match with the results. I'll update the list once I've checked with the other competitor.

4)You cannot challenge to high up for example if i am a bronze rank i cannot challenge gold or platinum i may only challenge up to bronze or a silver up to 5 spots ahead of you if you are silver you can challenge 5 spots but u can't just jump to platinum gold can challenge any one but not the champ you must be platinum and you must be 2nd or 3rd rank to challenge the champ.


5) Added: Due to confusion:

You cannot challenge people in a lower spot than you, and also challenging does not begin until all spots are filled.


The Point System!

Everyone ranked has a win/loss ratio. You only get points when you defend your title. The ratio stays if you're gain or lose a rank. If you're ranked 20, and you lose your spot, then that ratio will be saved until you come back on the list again.

My win loss record should be around 65/35, but now... I hate it when wifi racers... turn off their DS right when they realize they are about to lose.
