Role Playing FAQ

1) What is role playing?

Role playing can be many different things, done in many different ways. Some examples are:

• Taking on the role of another person and pretending to be them. This is usually used as a therapeutic technique to help mend broken relationships, or even as a joke between friends.
• Taking on the role of a character from a TV show, video game, etc. and playing out a story as those characters. This is considered a form of fan fiction.
• Taking on the role of your own original character and pretending to be them. You can play out a story, or even just joke around.

Either way, role playing is fun! You get the opportunity to step out of your own shoes for awhile and become someone else! It's just like Halloween, minus the silly costumes!


2) How do I role play?

This is a very difficult question to answer; there's so many different ways! And everyone has their own role playing style!

Let's look back at question 1. I told you about 3 different ways to role play, right? The first 2 are pretty self-explanatory, so let's look at the 3rd.

First, you have to establish your character. Start with something simple...like his/her name. Pick something that sounds good to you. You can even use your own name if you'd like!

Now, let's see what your character can do. Does he/she fight? If so, how? Does he/she have magical powers? Are they offensive or defensive powers? It also helps to name their moves. Or maybe they don't have any powers at all! Maybe they're skillful with a bow, or a great swordsman. Do what you like! Don't forget, though, that all characters must have a weakness of some kind.

Now for the fun part. Every character needs a good background story! Is he/she good or evil? Or maybe neutral? Where is he/she from? What is it he/she wants most? What fuels this desire? Heck, even worry about the little things, like if they're selfish or generous!

As you can see, there's actually quite a bit of work that goes into role playing! But that's fine; this is half the fun!


3) I want to try role playing, but nobody will join me! D:

Have you checked out the Lair of the Role Players? I'm sure someone there is willing to role play with you! However, don't go to the extent of spamming or annoying people about it. That will drive people away.


4) Some friends and I are about to role play. Umm...how do we start?

Easy! Just come up with a plot you plan to follow, or a goal you'd like to accomplish. If you don't want to do that, just have a scenario the characters are thrown into and build from there!


5) Where can I go for role playing?

Lots of places. Check out the other role playing threads and see if they interest you. Or you can role play in the chat room and get someone to join you in the role play room or a wifi room. You could also role play in blogs (here is a good example), profile comments, etc.


6) I was yelled at and/or banned for role playing in chat! WTF!

I certainly hope you weren't in the main chat...role playing isn't allowed there! You have to take it to another room. Role playing can interrupt others' conversations. Have some respect!


7) People keep interrupting my chat role plays. How do I keep them out?

Unfortunately, this is a problem all role players must face. There are always n00bs who can't mind their own business and go into a random room asking "does ne1 have pkmn???" Asking these people to leave usually works, but when they don't listen, the ignore button offers a quick fix!


8) I want to role play, but I'm not in the mood to play out some story...

Then just be silly! Heck, just look on my profile and there are probably some RP-ish comments! It's fine to goof off sometimes; role playing is supposed to be FUN!!!


9) People won't stop bugging me about wanting to role play!

Then take it as a compliment! If people keep asking you to role play, they probably think you're good at it! And if you don't want to role play, then just say so! It's okay to not want to role play sometimes. I'm quite sure the person(s) asking will understand. If not, they fail. =P
