Hey guys. I had some trouble when I first tried to set up my Internet on my PS3, and so I figured I'd go ahead and post some stuff to help other members out. I know it might seems obvious how to do it to so of you, but not to all of us. :P
There are two different methods you can play online on your PS3. Look both of them over, see what is required of each, and pick the best that suits you from there.
Using a Wired Connection:
Note: A Router is needed in order to use both your PS3 and the Computer at the same time.
Required:
- Internet (duh)
- An Ethernet Cable (comes with the purchase of your PS3)
- A place to plug your Ethernet Cable into (AKA: Cable modem) Plugging in your Ethernet Cable:
Step one: To set up a Wired Connection, you will need an Ethernet Chord. It should look like this:
Step 2: Plug one end of the Chord into your Cable Modem. Slot should look like this:
Step 3: Plug the other end of the Chord into your PlayStation 3 System. Slot should look like this:
When you have a wired connection to the Internet, it is not necessary to adjust any of the default settings. (It is done automatically). If you aren't able to connect with the default settings, follow the instructions to adjust the settings.
Go to "Network Settings", which can be accessed as so: Home Menu> Settings> Network Settings (the last option). Once there, press the "X" button to enter the settings.
Select "Internet Settings", which should be the second option down. Press "X"
It will prompt you with some message saying that you will lose your current connection, just hit Yes by pressing "X"
You will then see two options, "Wired Connection", and "Wireless Connection". Select "Wired Connection" by pressing "X"
Select Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.
- If you select Easy, then the basic settings are automatically set.
- If you select Custom, then you need to enter the settings. Refer the settings supplied by your Internet service provider.
Using a Wireless Connection:
Required:
- An Internet connection
- A Wirless Internet Router (or at least one nearby you, if you're going to use like a neighbor's :x)
- Cable Modem
- Info/keys for your Router (SSID, WEP key, WPA key)
These are the basic steps needed to set up your Wireless Connection:
Go to "Network Settings", which can be accessed as so: Home Menu> Settings> Network Settings (the last option). Once there, press the "X" button to enter the settings.
Select "Internet Settings", which should be the second option down. Press "X"
It will prompt you with some message saying that you will lose your current connection, just hit Yes by pressing "X"
You will then see two options, "Wired Connection", and "Wireless Connection". Select "Wired Connection" by pressing "X"
Select "Scan" by pressing the "X" button.
Your PlayStation 3 will then search for all nearby access points, and prompt you with a list of the,
Select which of the Connections you wish to use by highlighting it, and pressing the "X" button. (If you do not see your access point, try rebooting your Router, or contacting the admin of that Router)
It will then just show you then name of the Connection, go ahead and hit "Right" on the D-Pad.
Pick what type of Security settings your Access point has. (once again, contact the Router Admin if you do not know this)
If the Router was chosen to be locked by the Admin, you will be asked to enter the "Key". This again can be found out by contacting the Admin.
Select Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.
- If you select Easy, then the basic settings are automatically set.
- If you select Custom, then you need to enter the settings. Refer the settings supplied by your Internet service provider.
After having a stupid moronic buggy wireless connection with signal strength fluctuating anywhere from 70 to 90%... I just ordered a 50ft cat6 Ethernet cable to run from my den (PC/modem/router) to the living room (ps3). I figured if I do it now.... I know I'll be good for any games I'm playing now... but I desperately want it for Modern Warfare 2. I'm no longer screwing around when it comes to lag.
