FAQ: Red Ring Of Death

What is it?

The Red Ring of death basically your Xbox's way of telling something is wrong. It is when your Xbox is showing red lights, instead of the usual green lights in the upper left and two bottom quadrants.

Main Point: If Red Lights are showing, seek immediate help!

Why Did this Happen to Me?

This Sad Moment most likely happened from 1 of 3 reason which are;

1. The chords that are hooked up to your Xbox 360 are unplugged or not plugged in all the way, try turning your console off and fix the chords. Then try turning it back on.
2. You have been playing your Xbox 360 too much which has led to it overheating. Hopefully by you NOT PLAYING it for about 1-5 hours will bring your console back to its normal state.
3. Your xbox has hardware failure. DO NOT try and take the xbox apart yourself to try and save money, for this only makes it worse. You must call Microsoft or perhaps your local gamestore to figure out the next steps.

What do I do if I have the ring?

The absolute first thing that you should do if you found out that you have the RRD is to first call your local gamestore. The gamestore's that are in my local area have you pay for a warranty when you first buy it. By doing this you have save the hassle of having to call Microsoft,ect.

However, If that plan fails and you are sitting in your house ripping your hair out, follow these next steps.

Call Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-XBOX

You will send your Console away to Microsoft

They will send you a refurbished Xbox 360 console. (Not a definite, however this is what happens most of the time)

When sending in your Console to Microsoft, don't ship in your cables and plugs. If Microsoft sends you a refurbished system, they may not send the plugs needed.

How Do i Prevent this Ring?

Nothing can prevent this from happening however there are some steps that could shorten your chances .

• Dont Play for too many hours. If you are playing your console for 8 hours straight, stop it. I myself only play for about 3 hours during one sitting. I would recommend you don't play for more than 4 hours. However, if this is impossible for you, then install your favorite game on your Hard Drive. This is much better because it doesn't require your console to work so hard to play the game and it stays cool for a longer time.
• Do not place your 360 Vertically. Think about it, would you really want to risk you watching your console fall on it side? This not only damages the console but scratches whatever disk in it.
• Hair and Dust are major factors. If you have a pet in your house, after every play or so just lightly blow in the vents to keep hair from being stored in there or get a fan to blow in the bag of the console.

Hopefully nobody is forced to encounter this infamous ring. Good Luck.

hmmm nice guide here add this

try to installl the games that you play constantly. if your addicted to a game that isn't on XBLA try installing the game to the HD, it may take up more space but it just might make your 360 last longer.

I got something just as bad as the RROD... well not as bad but i just lost my $60 Halo 3 disc because of a circle scratch...

I've had the RROD before and it was the one where your xbox isn't getting good ventilation but there is a trick with towels. I guess I'll post a video up for it if anyone needs it.

Yes I was going to post those videos but there were so many of those videos I decided not to post one.

Also because I didn't know that those towels actually worked. My friend tried it and said it didn't change anything but now im thinking he did something wrong.

If you got the RRoD then Microsoft will fix your XBOX 360 without question or warranty as this was the outcome of a lawsuit against Microsoft. Most newer consoles will not get the RRoD as the new motherboard fixed this issue although their are others. Look as much as I love my 360, we bought an XBOX 360 which means this is something that you should have know about and be expecting befoer you bought it.

I need to buy a new HD. I wonder if the next xbox can use the current 360 HD (so I wouldn't be wasting my money.) It's hard to belive their could be a new xbox coming out.....can you imagine the possibilities?

The Jasper mothboards started to be used since August of last year. Any system manufautured in 2009 has that board in it. their were a few other boards that had the RRoD fix on them before then but the Jasper is the latest. Any system that is not an Elite and has a HDMI port is a newer motherboard that should not see the RRoD.

haha therapy, sending it in to the warehouse in texas is very long, no xbox 360 for me makes everything else go black and white
