A new independent study shows Microsoft's lingering 'Red Ring of Death' (RROD) hardware issue that results in the console breaking appears to be on the decline.

SquareTrade, the largest independent warranty provider, has analyzed the failure rates of over 16,000 new consoles at random covered by the company for the last two years. The company provided additional information, saying the breakdown was: 2,500 PS3s, 2,500 Xbox 360s and 11,000 Wiis. The study highlights the many prevalent hardware issues and errors found in today's consoles.

One major point the study revealed is that since the inclusion of the smaller, cooler chipsets, often referred to as 'Jasper' chips, the Xbox 360 console has seen less and less 'Red Ring' errors.

"When looking at over 500 units purchased in 2009, fewer than 1% of customers have reported a RROD error as of Aug 2009," the report states. "It is still too early to definitively assert that Jasper has given RROD a knockout punch, but such an argument may be pronounceable in the coming months."

The study also shows, however, after two years of useage, the Xbox 360 becomes the most unreliable of the three consoles compared to Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. According to the company's data, the Xbox 360 suffered a failure rate of 23.7%, while the PlayStation 3 (10%) and Wii (2.7%) come in well behind.

SquareTrade does note that many costumers are reporting the RROD error straight to Microsoft, which would bypass the company's statistical data, and says the failure rate of the Xbox 360 could be as high as 35%.

This data comes only weeks after Game Informer published its own survey results, indicating the Xbox 360 failure rate was as high as 54%

The study is quite thorough and is definitely worth checking out on SquareTrade's website.

RRoD fails. At least it's in the decline. I have had my current Xbox for over a year now with no problems. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I've had my 360 for more than 2 years and I've never had the RROD... I wouldn't worry about it. Just be careful with it and follow some of the tips others have posted and you should be fine.

I've had the RROD, luckily my wires cames loose at the back of my Xbox and it was nothing serious, at the time I had no idea what the RROD was. But everytime I switched it on before I found out the problem the on button which is usually green flashed red (hopefully thats what your talknig about). I'm glad still works

Call it luck but I seriously think it's the amount of time you spend playing it. I use to keep my xbox on for 12+ hrs a day and sometimes I fell asleep with it on. Which is the main reason why my xbox got the RROD. Ever since I bot it repaired it's been working fine so it might be the activity of the 360 that leads to serious overheating problems AKA RROD.

That's not the RROD.
That's just to letting you know that a cable is loose.
I had that too.
