How to save Hyrule! A Link guide ![]() Please read: Ok, so this is pretty much the first guide I ever wrote in like a year. Last year I wrote a (probably sucky) guide on Meta-knight and Zero Suit Samus on my home forum. I decided "why not make a guide for Link?" since I main him and I know him pretty well. I'm also not sure how a guide should be made, so it may be unorganized and random, so sorry if that's the case Dx Ok, so first of all, I'll start out with things you should know about Link. He is low tier, is very slow, cannot jump very well, and has a very poor recovery move. He is very versatile with his projectiles. He also is powerful close-up. Grabbing: Link's grabbing move, Hookshot, can reach pretty far compared to other Brawlers' grabs however, if you miss, you will be totally vulnerable to an attack. A good way to trick your opponent to avoid this happening is to do a pivot-grab. To do this, run behind the opponent, and press the Z button and the direction opposite your heading simultaneously. A good combo you can do with one of Link's grabs is throw them down, then do a short hop to bair (double-kick), then follow up with a Gale Boomerang angled up at the opponent. With bombs, throw one up into the air, and grab the opponent and throw them up into the bomb. You can short hop to Zair which is safe and very effective. When this move is used, be sure to follow up with an attack. You can grab onto a ledge with Link's Hookshot. This is very good for planking people, as you are at a safe distance when they are trying to recover. Characters like Ivysaur, Ike, and Kirby, may have trouble recovering if you pull this off right. To grant yourself a few invincibility frames when hanging, pull yourself up, then jump away from the ledge and re-grab it again. This is a great way for planking people. DACUS: DACUS (Dash Attack to Up Smash), aka wave-smashing, is an Advanced Technique that Link can preform. All you have to do is dash forward, tilt down on the c-stick, then the grab button + up on the joystick IMMEDIATELY after you tilted c-down. If you did it correctly, you should slide into your opponent doing Link's up smash. It takes quite some practice. I can't even pull it off flawlessly yet. Random tips and such: Link is good hand-to-hand as he his from far away. What I usually do when a match starts is mix up arrows, bombs, and boomerangs, to get the opponent confused. Then I may run in and start to punish with some good swordplay and power-shielding, then if they are far away, I continue the projectiles to lure them back. When an opponent's damage is high, how should try to finish them off with a side-smash, dair, or down-smash. Those three are killers. However, when doing Link's dair, make sure you're positioned well, cause if you miss, you'll be vulnerable to attack. Bombs (you want it? It's yours my friend! (YouTube Poop reference ._.): You should make the most use of Link's bombs during a fight. One thing I like to do with them is I take one out, and throw it up in the air, then take another one out, and jump over the opponent, and (lightly) drop a bomb onto them. Confuse them with bombs, and jumble them up with some projectiles, like I stated earlier. You can also toss one up in the air, take another out and throw it at your opponent. Then grab the first bomb you threw while it's falling back down, and toss that one, too. You can pull of many good mind-games and combos with Link's bombs. Another kool bomb trick you can do is something I like to call the "Infinite Bomb" trick. Since Link can only use two bombs at a time, once one explodes, take another out. After ever second bomb explodes, take another bomb out. It will be like you have infinite bombs this way. Final Smash tips: If you're playing with items, and have Link's final smash, take note that Link's final smash has a GREAT range. It can hit someone half as long as Final Destination. Most people don't know this, so when you're far away, they wont expect you to unleash it yet, but that's when you're wrong. Also, you should pull out a bomb before you execute the FS. Link will be holding a bomb while doing his FS, and it will explode, causing the opponent to take an extra 5% damage. Recovering: When you know your gonna have trouble recovering after being knocked off the stage, always take out a bomb. Reason why is cause when you run out of jumps and recovery move, the bomb may explode in your hand, which will grant you a free recovery move. Gale Boomerang: Link's Gale Boomerang is more powerful depending on how cfar it has to travel to hit the opponent. The closer they are to you, the mor powerful. If they are far away, the boomerang will lose its momentum, and therefore it wont hurt the opponent, and just lightly push them a little. If the opponent is in the way when the boomerang is on its way back, it can reel them into, in which you can pull of a smash attack. Hyrulian Shielding: Link's shield acts as a normal one would, but it can never break. So take advantage of that, and use it to block incoming projectiles. It does very good at blocking projectile. This method works very well against spammers, too Jab Canceling: Jab canceling is somewhat effective. Just press A twice, then follow up with a smash attack or something of the sort. Most of the time your opponent wont defend against it. So umm...yeah...there's my guide =\ hope I helped somehow ._. /meh guide

Its a pretty good start for a link guide.
I would recommend doing a in-depth look at his moveset, some vids or link to vids of Link pros. Try putting combos in its own section of the guide. Also, link is kinda ************************ty upclose compared to the rest of the cast. Most of his moves either have some start up lag or ending lag which leaves him open to rape if not utilized correctly. Link is best used as a spam character if you want to actually make a good run against more superior members of the cast IMO. Japan links usually use that battle plan for for him as well as a few others. As you stated, use his projectiles to rape til the opponent at high damage and finish him with one of his best 3 kill moves. You also, can use the dair to bounce off shields into other moves or you can even mindgame with the dair by slightly inputing the commands for it and link will not come down with much force. Link is in the top 3 for being the heaviest character in the game. This is a con to many since he is subject to low perfect rape, chain grabs and other combos. But you can also use his fast falling as a positive thing such as Nair fast-falling combos, mindgames, staying mobile and other things. Some of these tips are common sense but meh -Always keep bombs handy for recovery, offensive or even defensive purposes such as getting out of chain grabs and low percent combos. -Always keep on the move with link and keep your spacing against certain characters. -Try to stay away from edges when battling characters that can gimp link with ease such as DDD, Mk, etc. -Keep in mind that Link's nair is a great air move because of its wierd hitboxes, tripping abilities, gimping abilities and combo abilities. Here are some things you can incorporate into your guide and again its a good start for a guide bro. ONE MORE THING: here copy this code <3 Muzic request =) | | \/

Bouncing off shields with dair is alright if the opponent isn't/can't punish you after the first hit. Otherwise, it's not really advisable.
I don't think nair is all that great for anything except maybe the hitboxes because it's very easy to punish if shielded. VERY easy. (Also I don't know how Link is going to gimp with it; he's so heavy he'll die even if he gimps the opponent) Simple piece of advice I have to contribute though: Use your zair. It is probably his best spacing move, as it has two parts to it, and both hits have relatively good knockback despite %s. (Not that it'll matter, since you're aiming to hit with it from a distance)

Well Link's nair has priority over some of the other characters' moves. Also, fast falling nair is quick enough to transition into his jab attacks and thats where jab cancel and staying unpredictable falls in.
His Nair can gimp some of the cast members and I dont mean the ones that literally have multiple jumps such as the kirby characters. But his nair can gimp characters such with ranging from horrible to somewhat decent recovery if hit right. If timed right, you can do nair your opponent twice and still be able to get back to the stage. =)
