Apple plots games invasion
The DS and PSP are last gen platforms – and the only true next-gen portable platform is the iPod Touch.
That was the message from Apple this week, as the company finally revealed its intentions to snaffle market share in the traditional gaming space – after years of fervent speculation about its plans. Speaking exclusively to MCV, the company confessed that its new marketing campaign encourages consumers to buy iPod purely “to play our games” – and even marked the device out as a real threat to Nintendo and Sony’s handheld efforts. Greg Joswiak, head of iPod and iPhone marketing told us: “It’s not just the screens that are superior to DS – it’s the graphics capability, the computing power and the App Store distribution model. “I had an analyst tell me in September – and he was right – that the DS is the past of gaming devices, and iPod Touch is the future of gaming devices. It certainly has our competitors scrambling in what they’re going to do in reaction to this. This product is capable of so much more, and there’s a tremendous synergy we have with the iPod Touch and game developers.” iPod users can already download 1,500 games via Apple’s App Store – and the platform holder is doing its best to persuade traditional publishers to add a huge number over the next year. When asked if the iPod Touch was better suited to DS’s family audience or PSP’s more hardcore-focused gamers, Joswiak replied: “iPod Touch represents a more future-looking view of gaming, so maybe it’s in a category of its own. There’s nothing else that does what it does. It’s a very interesting new entrant. I think maybe that’s a better question for [Sony and Nintendo].” And UK games retail has told MCV it welcomes Apple’s intentions for games – although warned that its platform needs more key exclusive titles to encourage consumer interest. “The iPod Touch and iPhone are both fantastic gaming devices,” said Play.com head of games Gian Luzio. “We’d be very interested in selling games for them – and that would be digitally, because it couldn’t happen any other way. “The devices just needs more games from the publishers we know and love. At the moment, it has the impression of being a bit of a cottage industry, confined to a handful of developers. But that will change. It’s starting to become apparent that iPod has real relevance for a core gaming audience.” Category buyer at Comet Debbie O’Neill added: “Given its success in MP3, I think any games console with Apple behind it could do very well. I could certainly see iPod as a serious handheld offering if they got behind it.” Gamestation already stocks iPod for its games-focused consumers. GAME would not comment on whether it has plans to introduce the device when asked by MCV. source Apple? Really? I dunno...without a big name console company name backing it up, will it really take off? My predictions...this will go very much like the N-gage. |

Work together to take down Apple? I think Apple can do that themselves. If people want to play fun interactive games that requires touching, they probably already own a DS, and if they want to listen to all their favorite music on a handheld, they have a PSP.
I just don't think this will be taken seriously enough, again, considering that these guys REALLY look like they are in it to get some of the gaming pie and don't have the fortune of already having an established gaming fanbase. |

I heard about apple joining the videogame market but thought it was a rumor. If apple was to be a contender I really do think Sony, and Nintendo would reach an agreement. Just pointing out some ps3 games that would work with a wii-mote: Little Big Planet [OMG, that would be amazing], Want some hardcore? Gears of war, is what would work!I don't know not a probable reality for Nintendo but who knows in todays crashing economy...could save Sony, and help nintendo.

*sigh* I-Pod stop trying to be something you are not. You are not a gaming console you are a device that people use to play music on. .__.
Really, if you wanta game get a game console. I find that one statement that some people buy I-pods just for the games as a big joke..... let alone saying that it's superior to the PSP and DS..... They're really gonna have to try hard if they want to prove to me that they're serious about the gaming market... |

I have been quite impressed by what i've seen of the gaming capabilities of the iPod Touch actually, I think Nintendo should really take note.
Some problems I see with it, are: Absence of buttons, Sure, touch screen and motion sencing is (very) nice, but it really could use some buttons to top it off. The fact the games are all downloads, this is just personal preferance, and maybe i'm a little shallow lol, but I much, much prefer to own phisical objects any day of the week. Then there's the way Apple like to come out with a new model for all their iPods every week too, and if that renders your older model useless by making new games only compatible with the new one, I could see that becomming quite tiresome. Oh, and of cource, it will never have Nintendo's games that make the DS so great. The technology behind it all is very impressive tho, even if I can't see it taking off, so as I said, Nintendo should really take note.

Their apps are enjoyable, I'll give them that. It's just that Apple should stick to what they do. Microsoft got lucky getting as far as they did into the gaming industry. Everyone likes iPods and they're earning a fortune from them. What more could they want? The DS and the PSP seem to have everything that we would want from handhelds anyways.
