Are You Conscious About Buying "Kiddie" Games?
Game ratings help decipher what age group a game is categorized in based on the amount of content. Mature games are better suited for the 17+ age group because the content is too strong for younger gamers. E rated games are for everyone for the fact that the content is oriented for any age. Even though these types of games are for anyone, is it true that older gamers would avoid E rated games?
For myself as an example, I would purposely avoid games that are meant more for younger people just because they aren't pointed towards my age group, and I won't purchase one of these even if I know I'll love the game, and even if I want it. Usually I would stay around the Teen area, and avoid cartoony video games. I suppose this is because of self-consciousness of buying these titles. Kirby is a perfect example. Everyone loves these types of games, very entertaining. But imagine your 5 foot 10 and walk into a game store with a dark hoodie and baggie jeans. The store clerks are eyeing you closely like they expect you to shop lift. To their surprise, you hand one of the cashiers a game with a pink, cartoony blob, with pirate mice behind it to purchase, and they start laughing in your face. You look back and forth embarassed, thinking quickly of a valid excuse, and you come up with, "I'm buying it for my sister". The clerks aren't fully convinced and you are too embarassed to show your face in this game store ever again. This has never happened to me, but I think of it as the worst case scenario. Games like Super Mario Galaxy, Banjo Kazooie, Wario Land: Shake It!, and even Animal Crossing: City Folk are good examples of high quality games that older teens/adults would avoid just because of the cartoony image. What's your take on this? Do you do this as well? I say that these games may look kiddie but its hard to pass them up, even if you've outgrown them. Although, hypocritically I have avoided many games like these.

I was at Toys R' Us and I almost didn't buy the original Cooking Mama because I thought I would look stupid with it. Turns out it was a great game! And no one really cared about what I was holding at the time, so I was fine in the end.
It's also kind of awkward in those moments when there is a line of kids in front of your with Gears of War or some other mature game and you have a game like Animal Crossing in your hands. You may feel dumb at the time, but it's all worth it once you start the game back up at your house and forget all about the buying experience, IMO.

Am I conscious? Yes and no, but not in the way I think most people would expect. I tend to avoid most mature games simply because it might sound really cool, but developers often make it mature by adding superfluous elements that to me, makes the game lose it's appeal. I mean, a game like Bioshock and Gears definitely benefit from their style, themes, and word choice to get the M rating. But then I look at the Dead or Alive series or the Halo series and feel like the developers really don't take me seriously and think that I'm easily impressed by breast physics and a couple of swear words.
While T or E rates games on the other hand, I know I won't get that kind of feeling and everything is kept in pretty good taste and sometimes, games like De Blob come around and blow me away by how fun it really is, proving a higher age rating doesn't make it a better game. |

I personaly don't care what ppl think of me about what games I play. If you avoid a game that's kiddie because it makes you feel less adult or mature like, then maybe you might need to do some more growing up.

Hmm, I get embarresed at times when I see people looking at a 13 year old buying games for kids around the ages of 8. I still liek them anyway. It's like the phrase don't judge a book by it's cover. You can never tell how good a game is until you have actually played it.
I'm ok with any type of game and I'll at least try them. Though I'm saying my money for a ps3 soon

I try not care about what people think of me based on what games I play or buy. So far, I haven't been self-concious on what games I purchase.

Yeah, I really don't care. I buy games based on research I've done with it. I usually don't buy games that will wear out in two days and never be heard of again. I have many GBA games that may seem kiddy but are pretty fun and somewhat challenging. That's all I ask for in a game. I wouldn't go buying Pocket Polly's Pony Ride for that would be embarassing XD but I keep my mind open to some kiddy games that I can get entertainment value for
