Pauline was the original damsel in distress from the very first Donkey Kong, before Peach was made.

I think they must've wanted more of a Princess name. Pauline sounds like the perfect name for a damsel, not really for a Princess (which fits much better with Peach).

idk i think they made it peach because now u nvr hear anyone named "Pauline" really, u dont even hear paul

LOL but if they never had a Peach and Mario was always saving Pauline then you would know.

Well I think it's just because Super Mario Brothers was a game where the Mario Bros. saved the Mushroom Kingdom. In fact back then Peach was still known as Princess Toadstool. So yea the reason Pauline was forgotten was because there was no way to make it work that Pauline was the power of the Mushroom Kingdom... unless they somehow made her live a double life as Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom and an ordinary girl.

Actually I think bringing back Pauline in MVDK2 was a good way to contribute to the original DK game that the series is (kind-of) based off of. Although it runes all of my scientific theories of how it is possible for Mario to be a good role-model relationship wise. <_> and some good DK theories too.

Edit: Oh did anyone also happen to realize that Pauline was a blond in the original Donkey Kong but she now has black hair...... why did they change that?

They had to individualize I suppose. I bet alot of the people who played this Mario vs. DK game don't even remember (or know) who Pauline is. They must've wanted to make it clear that Pauline is Not Peach.
