Should Nintendo go the way of the Sega? (a num. list on pro's if they did)
It's late so I will keep this short.
What if Nintendo just made 3rd party games and stopped creating systems or perhaps develop game exclusively for another system? Would you oppose? Here are some quick pro's and quite frankly I can't think of many con's. 1. More options in gameplay 2. Better graphics 3. You wont have to buy a system just to play Nintendo made games(unless you dont have a next gen system other then wii) 4. Nintendo will be able to consistently put enough manpower into ALL there exclusives. 5. You wont have to see that nasty looking woman at the E3 shows playing those casual crap games. 6. Online features (more then likely), with serious capabilities. 7. No more friend codes 8. Be able to chat no problem with your pals while racing them in an Xbox 360 F Zero, or flying side by side in Star Fox or watching leaderboards with a new Pikmin game to see how collected or finished the level the fastest. 9. Natal perpheral... You want to play like Link, well now you can really jump into his boots (and skirt if thats your thing). 10. *looks up at point number 4 again*.. I came up with these in a matter of 5 minutes, what do you guys think? Want to add or argue for or against?

All I will say is that Nintendo will keep making systems and 1st party games for it's own console. And the only reason Sega did that is because it's Dreamcast didn't sell very well. This is very obvious, Nintendo is #1 right now, and wont do that. I think this thread is pointless as all other members here will say the same.

This is essentially the "what if there was only 1 console" argument which has gone on since forever.
As much as it has it's pros, in the real word, it just simply wouldn't happen. There has to be more than one console to keep things competitive, and I actually think this gen, there is a good diversity between the consoles, so no need for change. In fact the Wii is a hell of a lot different from the others than 360 or PS3. Cons for Ninty going 3rd party then (Using Wii as an example):

I don't see that EVER happening.
Not atleast while Nintendo continues to make great systems, and great games.. sure, their systems have "flaws"--but all systems do. And they have YET to screw-themselves over like Sega did with "Dreamcast"--and overhyping it didn't help(anyone else remember ads w/ "9/9/99" on em'?) Nintendo is MUCH more financially secure...and stopped trying to be a "3rd-Party" publisher when they worked w/ Philips to create the FAIL known as the Philips Cd-i.... They learned that relying on another company to help w/ their main series will result in bad sales, and failure. Sure Nintendo's Virtual Boy flopped, but they rebounded... Nintendo will NOT go the way of Sega, or OTHER former Console makers, like Atari(who was saved when it was purchased by Hasbro). Sega flopped, so did Atari--and neither one could rebound. Nintendo HAS, time and time again... Being around for 120 years(since 1889)--Nintendo's watched companies start, do well, and then eventually rather FLOP, or take the reigns, and bring a once-dead publisher BACK to the forefront of the Gaming Industry. Besides, Nintendo stays stronger than any of its predecessors because they KEEP their own characters, or if they DO let someone else make games w/ them(i.e: Donkey Kong), they still retain majority control of them... And wouldn't it be WEIRD AS HELL, if Mario, Link, or Samus graced the cover of a PS3 or XBOX game? That'd be wrong--and that would MOST likely be the beginning of Nintendo's downward spiral to the level of Sega, and Atari. (and its weird ENOUGH to see Sonic w/ Mario)

I totally agree with Fyree the Spirit God in every point
Ninty is a far too experienced and great company to cut down their ambitions. Besides it's been the leader innovating the new gameplay of the last consoles (not only their own ones, like Wii and DS, but also Microsoft and Sony are imitating them). |

No way in hell is Nintendo going 3rd party. They're the ones who brought the gaming industry back from the grave. And if the gaming industry ever dies again, (don't see that happening) Nintendo would still be there fighting till the bitter end while Sony and Microsoft would probably bail on the market and rely on their other products to keep their company going.

This is a very stupid question. I hate to tell you. Nintendo has been one of the most succeful video game conpanies in the world. They not only make great games, but more importantly, systems. Look at all of there hits. The wii, the 64, the NES. No way would they go 3rd party. They are a company of innovation and will always stay like that. At least I hope so in my lifetime.

The difference between Sega and Nintendo. Nintendo actually has money, Sega didn't when the Dreamcast died and they were sued by Sony (so I've heard) and that's what killed them.
If Nintendo didn't want friend codes, they wouldn't have put them in...if Nintendo wanted to have HD graphics, they would have put aside their plan to make a cheap and effective console and give it HD graphics. Everything they have done was a business decision and it's because they have so many exclusives that they don't have to ever go third party. |

I understand the cons you mentioned, but I just find very unlikely that Nintendo will go the same way as Sega. Besides, that would be bad for game development and technology in general, because they have been the most innovative company so far. If Nintendo had become a 3rd party this generation instead of creating Wii, Microsoft wouldn't have had to invent "Natal", for example ![]() |
