Can't remember any hard game that seriously gave me trouble. But one that is by far the hardest that I've played is Bioshock on the hardest difficulty.
Enemies are annoying, sometimes sneaking up behind you, especially when they come in groups. Stationary weaponry fired at you will easily drain your life after one or two shots. And, the Big Daddy's, the tough bastards are no joke, only way to kill these dudes is to fight cheap and have some sneaky strategies of your own, the ones who have harpoons (if I recall correctly) will easily rape you, so more to deal with rather than them just ramming the sh*t out of ya. I often found myself backtracking to get more health from a simple fight.I have to admit that it was still fun, though. |

Ecco the Dolphin.
No, I'm not kidding. That game is INSANELY hard. It's a game you have to play to find out how hard it is, really. At first glance, it doesn't look too bad, but once you start it... @_@ Honorable mentions go to Vectorman and Megaman Zero.

The emptiness of the game freaks me out. As for Vectorman I couldn't agree more. The first one is hard, but god is the second one even less forgiving. I remember playing it when I was little and only being able to get to the first few levels. I have the Sonic Genesis Collection for the Xbox 360 and it has both Vectormans on it, and even now I can barely beat it.

As for Vectorman 2, I also played that when I was little, (On Sonic Mega Collection, when I was 8 or 9, I believe) and couldn't get passed "Night in the Swamp" (I sure loved the music though). When I played it again on Genesis Collection on my PSP, I found out that I hadn't improved much over the years =P At least in Vectorman 1, I managed to make some decent progress =P |

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
There's a huge blind spot over Link's head, and I always die because of that. Then I got stuck and stopped playing. It's hard because I have no idea what to do next. D:
