They're just people, like us. For goodness sake, when you people hear on the news that some random person in your neighborhood died, you're just like "aw that sucks. Wonder what else is on TV..."

Because such people know about them, and the fact that especially in this case, it's a bit untimely, just as Michael Jackson's was. The fact that they did something that made them a celebrity in the first place, and the fact that we liked that certain thing. Billy Mays had his commercials and Michael Jackson had his songs. Sure, when someone who we don't know anything about dies, we're not going to be implied to care, but in this case, we know what these people did, which is why we pay attention to it.
