I just wanted to bring up a bunch of confirmed Swine Flu cases that just emerged out at my former Junior High School...279 students became sick, and the school is now closed until next Friday. It's terrifying to see that the Junior High School I attended 3 years ago has been outstruck by Swine Flu..and the school is only 3-4 blocks away from here..I'll be quite a bit more cautious now. I guess it hasn't gone away just yet.

And this is exactly why parents are furious. My former Junior High School was still open, regardless that 279 kids were absent. I don't see why schools should be open if so many people are infected. I guess they value education a lot more, but not safety? This is quite disappointing.

I'm pretty sure the schools are open because the CDC and the WHO are not recommending school closures now because of the outbreak of the swine flu. There are various state and health websites that are passing that information along. They are saying that anyone with the H1N1 virus (not calling it the swine flu anymore) should stay home until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours. They are also finding that the strain of flu is not as serious as even the common flu anymore and is very treatable. The strain also peaked about 3 weeks ago and is now dying down. However, the strain of flu most likely represents the flu of 1918, a pandemic strain of flu that killed hundreds of thousands in 1918. The onset of the flu was in the spring and died out quickly, but them came back in the fall and that's when it really did its damage.
I happen to be watching the H1N1 very closely because I'm leaving for Mexico on Thursday. I think that the fear that the media has given everyone is a little unnecessary, but it's always helpful to be informed. Like the normal flu, which kills more every year than this flu has done in its 3 week lifetime, people die from complications of the flu (like pneumonia, asthma, etc.), not the flu itself. I recommend to do your research on health related websites like the CDC, the WHO, and your state website. If you know spanish, read Mexico's site. Read between the lines on ABC and CNN and other sites because our media tends to feed on doom and gloom.

The first confirmed death of a New Yorker dying from Swine Flu occurred yesterday..he was a 55 year old man..more schools are becoming infected with the virus, and it's spreading uncontrollably. Another 4 schools closed today due to safety concerns, and more being confirmed sick.
