You can do a few different things with the candy.

If you leave a piece of candy outside, you can occasionally find ants on it (which you can catch).

One day, late in October, Jack will come to your town. If you give him a piece of candy, he will give you a piece of the Spooky Furniture (this is the only legit way to receive it).

One day, several weeks before Easter Monday, a character called Pavé will come to your town. If you take her three pieces of the color candy she requests, she will give you a piece of the Pavé series (this is the only legit way to receive it).

Duchess is right. The candy is a big part of the animal crossing year. i might have to try this trick out.
