Basic Nintendo DS and DS Lite FAQs

This FAQ is intended to address the more common questions and issues that arise while using a Nintendo DS or DS Lite. Please feel free to let me know any info you feel should be added to this FAQ ( Through PM please ). As time goes I shall try my best to keep it up to date and ever growing.

Special notes about the battery:

* The battery must be fully-charged before using for the first time. Charging your Nintendo DS battery can typically take around four (4) hours. It is recommended that you charge your Nintendo once every six months if the DS is not being used.

* The battery is able to be fully recharged at least 500 times. If it is in use very often the battery performance will begin to decline.

* You may re-charge the unit whenever you like, including during game play but, re-charging during game play will progress at a slower rate.

Recalibrating the Touch Screen

Please note: Using a screen protector can lower the sensitivity of the screen, making calibration difficult. If the problem you are encountering started happening after placing a screen protector onto your touch screen, this may be the cause of the problem.

1. Remove all games from the Nintendo DS Lite/Original model.

2. Turn your Nintendo DS on.

3. Once the "Touch the Touch Screen to continue" press “A” our touch the screen to continue to the menu.

4. When the main menu appears, use the Control Pad to place the cursor over the Settings Menu Panel at the bottom of the screen, and press the A Button (Or touch the icon).

5. Select this and press the “A” button or touch the icon.

6. Tap the square with your Nintendo DS’s stylus. It will move each time you touch it successfully.

* You must touch the red square precisely at each of the three positions; otherwise the test will continue to re-start.

* If the problem still persists after re-syncing your Nintendo DS touch screen your Nintendo DS may be in need of a repair.

7. Once the process complete, the four squares will appear, allowing users to test the touch screen sensitivity. (This phase is optional.) Tap the "Confirm" button in the lower-right corner.

8. Wait for the confirmation message to disappear, then tap “Quit” and “Yes” to shut down your system.

Adjust screen brightness

1. Remove all games from the Nintendo DS.

2. Power on your system.

3. Head for the main menu

4. Tap the brightness icon (small sun) located on the bottom left corner of your Nintendo DS’s touch screen.

* The original Nintendo DS has only two brightness settings: on and off. The battery will last six to 10 hours, depending on the type of game activity.
* The Nintendo DS Lite has four levels of brightness. The battery will last 15-19 hours on the lowest settings, and 5-8 hours on the brightest. but can vary depending on the type of game activity.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

At the Setup screen, tap Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings:

Then tap/select one of the Connection slots:

The you tap "Search For An Access Point":

Your system will now display the name of your Wireless router

If your Access Point has a blue, unlocked icon, tap the Access Point name, and then 'OK.' The Nintendo DS will then establish a connection with your router. Back out to the main screen of your game and your ready to play online.

**Note** When the lock is blue it means your router has no security therefore other people can log on using that router.

If your Access Point has a red, locked icon, the Nintendo DS has detected WEP (Security key) key security on your router. Tap the Access Point name on the Nintendo DS and then enter the WEP key for your router on the following screen and tap 'OK' to save the settings.

Once finished Tap OK to establish a connection with your Wireless router.

If your Access Point has a gray, locked icon, the Nintendo DS has determined your router's security settings are not supported by the Nintendo DS. In order to connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, you will need to either switch to WEP security, or remove the security setting of your router when connecting with the Nintendo DS.

For information on how to change your routers security settings click here.
