Basic Wii F.A.Q.'s

This FAQ is intended to address the more common questions and issues that arise while using the Wii. Please feel free to let me know any info you feel should be added to this FAQ. As time goes I shall try my best to keep it up to date and ever growing.

Question – Why does the color of the power button on my Wii change?

Answer - The different colors represent the mode the Wii is set in.
  • Red – The system is plugged in and turned off
  • Orange – The system is in stand-by mode. This is when the system has WiFi turned on. It will allow the system to passively receive messages with out the system being tuned on.
  • Green – The system is turned on and running.
Question - My pointer is freaking out and jumping all over. Do I have a Virus? Is my Wii messed up?

Answer - No your Wii is fine, and you do not have a Virus. The Wii as a console is flash based. This means data is not stored on a hard drive or other long term storage device. Items such as a virus, if they existed, would be wiped from the console when you power cycled the system.

Solutions -
A) Power Cycle your system.
  1. Shutdown the system if it is on.
  2. Unplug the power source from the back of the Wii.
  3. Wait 10 minutes.
  4. Plug the power source back into the console.

B) Change the batteries in your Wiimote.
C) Out side light can effect the Wiimote.
  • Make sure your sensor bad is aligned correctly.
  • Try closing window shades.
  • Try moving the position of the sensor bar to a more centered position.

Question - My disk does not read, what do I do?

Answer – Three Common solutions.
A) Is the game disc damaged/scratched?
Courses of action – You can clean the game your self with the following directions. You may also chose to take the game into a game retailer such as GameStop. Most offer a game buffing service for just a few bucks.

Cleaning a Game Disc
Fingerprints, smudges, and other foreign material can interfere with a game disc being properly read by the Wii console. Please use the information on this page to properly clean a dirty Game Disc.

Important Notes (please read first):
  • Use only: straight strokes when wiping the disc (do not use a circular motion).
  • Use only: a clean, soft, cotton cloth (do not use paper towels, facial tissue, etc.).
  • Use only: water (do not use soap or any other cleaning solution).
  • Do NOT use: solvents such as: benzine, window cleaner, paint thinner, anti-static aerosol spray or abrasive cleaners.
  • Do NOT use: machines designed to clean discs or remove scratches. These types of devices could damage the surface of the disc.
Properly cleaning a game disc:
1.Dampen a portion of a clean, soft, cotton cloth, using only plain water.
2.With the damp part of the cloth, use straight strokes and wipe the bottom of the disc (non-labeled side) from the inside rim to the outside rim.
3.Using a dry part of the cloth, use straight strokes and wipe from the inside rim to the outside rim.
4.After all of the water has been removed, let the disc sit for at least two minutes to completely dry before inserting it into the Wii console.
5.Try to play the game to see if the problem has been resolved.
  • If the problem has been resolved, be sure to properly take care of your game discs by storing them in their plastic cases in order to help prevent your discs from becoming dirty or scratched. Storing games in cases other than the ones they came in, or storing them outside their cases, may damage the disc.
  • If the same problem continues, the cause is likely damage to the disc. Use the disc replacement policy to determine how to get your game replaced.
  • If the game never worked or you are discovering errors in areas you have entered for the first time, it is possible that the problem could be with the system or the disc. (The system may still be the problem even if the disc shows some signs of damage.) Please call 1-800-255-3700 to discuss possible repair options.
B) Is the issue with your copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl?
Course of Action – Your best course of action would be to contact Nintendo. This is a known issue and they offer to fix the console for free! The information and form can be found in the following link.
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/rep...rm_us_ssbb.jsp
C) Is the Disc in the drive correctly?
Course of Action - Ensure that you are properly loading a Game Disc.
  • If your console is placed vertically, the disc label will face to the right.
  • If your console is placed horizontally, the disc label will face upwards

Question – What SD Card will work for my Wii? How do I use/install an SD card?

Answer – The Wii will accept most SD cards with out an issue. Here are the guide lines for cards that are most likely to work, or will work.
The Wii console is only compatible with SD Cards that are 2 GB (Gigabyte) or less. Cards with a capacity higher than 2 GB will likely not work with the Wii console.

SD Cards with a slow speed may experience slow transfer time when loading files, or may not work at all. Slow transfer times can also occur with SD Cards that have a great number of files on them.

While any SD Card with the above specifications may work, Nintendo has licensed specific SD Cards for use with the Wii console. You can identify these cards by the Nintendo Seal on the packaging of the SD Card. The following is a list of known licensed SD Cards and their manufacturers.
  • Bensussen Deutsch & Associates, Inc. (BD&A) Switch and Carry
  • 2 GB, 1 GB, 512 mb
  • SanDisk
  • 2 GB, 1 GB, 512 mb

The Official Nintendo Seal
Using an SD Card
  • To use an SD Card, open the SD Card Slot cover on the front of the console and insert the SD Card.

Question – Is there a way to eliminate lag with online play?

Answer – There is no silver bullet that will fix the issue once and for all. There are a few steps that can help with online play

Steps -
Change the channel -
Change the channel that your router broadcasts on. By default, most routers broadcast on channel 6. Change your router's channel setting to 1 or 11, as those do not overlap with other channels. Router "Channel" settings are typically found in the "Wireless Settings" area of your wireless router's setup utility. For information on accessing your router's settings, click here to select the brand name and model number of your router (if available), or consult the owner's manual for your router.
Check Your Location -
Check the location of your router. Move your router away from walls and off the floor and try to place it in a central location in your home. Also, keep it away from metal objects such as metal filing cabinets which can cause interference.
Are you compatible? -
Is your router and/or ISP compatible with the Wii? In working with dozens of different routers, we have determined that some routers or Internet Service Providers may not be compatible with the Wii consoles online features. Please click here to find out more.
Can you see me now? -
Is your router's firewall stopping your Wii from gaining access to the internet? Most routers have a built in firewall with some basic level set form factory. Please check to make sure your router's firewall is not set to block your Wii from accessing the internet. Please click here to find out how to access your router.
Whats a port? -
A port is like a doorway that allows information to flow from one specific room to the next. If you find that you can not find people to play with online, and have issues connecting to friends it could be caused by ports not being open to your Wii. Please click here to find how to access your router. Once you have gained access to your router, the simplest course of action is to turn on DMZ to your Wii.

Question - I'm have issues with Brawl reading/playing (none online issues)

Answer - Nintendo is aware of issues with the game and some consoles. Its a hardware based issue about 90% of the time, but the good news is Nintendo will fix it for free!
Follow the link to the repair page for Brawl issues.

Brawl Issues Repair

Wiimote Issues -

Things to make sure of first
  • Check to make sure the Sensor Bar cord is inserted into the back of the Wii console and the Sensor Bar is centered above or below your TV screen (more info).
  • Make sure you are using fresh batteries in the Wii Remote.
  • The Wii Remote Controller should be used between 3 to 10 feet from the TV.
  • Make sure no objects are blocking the signals between the Sensor Bar, the Wii console, and the Wii Remote.
  • Check for interference from infra-red light sources, such as candles, sunlight, fireplaces, and stoves.
  • Radio frequency interference may cause the Wii Remote to work erratically. Check for wireless devices such as cordless phones, wireless computer keyboards or mice, or other similar devices, and move or turn them off.

Re-Syncing your Wiimote -
  1. Turn the Wii console power OFF by pressing the POWER Button on the front of the console. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet for a few seconds. After a few seconds have elapsed, plug the cord back into the wall outlet.
  2. Turn the power of the Wii console ON. When you see the Health and Safety screen, open the small flap on the front of the Wii console to find a red button labeled "SYNC." Press and hold the SYNC Button down for 15 seconds. This will clear all the syncs on the Wii, allowing you to get a clean start to begin the process described below.
  3. After holding the SYNC Button on the Wii console down for at least 15 seconds, you can now "re-sync" your Wii Remotes:
  • With the first Wii Remote you wish to sync, remove the battery cover on the back of the Wii Remote to find a small red button just below the batteries.
  • Press and release the small red button just below the batteries on the Wii Remote; the blue lights on the front of the Wii Remote will blink.
  • Quickly press and release the red SYNC button on the inside of the white flap on the front of the Wii console (picture).
  • When the Player LED blinking stops and stays lit, the syncing is complete. The LED that is illuminated indicates the player number (1 through 4).
  • This sync procedure (steps "a" through "d" above) must be followed for each additional Wii Remote added to the system.
General Wifi issues in holiday months, during game releases ect.

Please note that during the holidays, and game releases there will be random issues with these services. Issues will range from slow downloads form the WiiShop, lag in game when you normally fine, to not being able to connect. This is due to the large number of new consoles being connected and using the Nintendo Connect System.

These issues typically last two weeks from any major even where a large number of new people are connecting to the Nintendo connect service.

Please don't see this as a bad thing, its a great thing! All those new consoles sold only means more people to play with, more money and incentive for Nintendo to better the Wifi system for Wii and DS!
