how big is an avi supposed to be?

it can be a certain a good one would be 150 x 150 or 135 x 135

It's your choice.

Although it will automatically be re-sized to no larger than 135x135 pixels.

Most people prefer 100x100 though.

135x135 is the default so I use anything ranging from 85x135 to 90x120 etc. (I sometimes just pick randomly and see what looks best) I like to try out different sizes instead of using the same old same old.

So to answer your question it isn't 'supposed' to be a certain size. Just no bigger than the site allows it to be.
