GIMP Uploading Brushes...unusual problem

GIMP Uploading Brushes...unusual problem
I am using GIMP 2.4.6, and when I try to upload brushes, they do not appear, no matter how many times I hit the refresh button or restart GIMP. When I looked in my folders, apparently GIMP is not compatible with the file types I download from DevianArt's GIMP Brushes. Everything I download is a .gbr and they are always greyed out when I try to set them as a brush using File>Preferences>Folders>Brushes. It lets me add the folders, but no compatible file types are in the folders. What can I do to upload my brushes to GIMP?

download .abr brushes.
Anything that says Photoshop brushes is compatible with your version of GIMP...
(yes, I said you may use Photoshop brushes in GIMP).
