DSi Sound Impressions: Big Disappointment

The main draw for DS Sound is the new SD card slot. Out with the GBA slot, the SD card slot enables users to put sound clips or music on their SD cards and then pop them into the DSi. A nice addition for some.

The actual DS Sound interface has to be the handheld's biggest let down. Sure, it's possible to record a ten second sound clip and then speed up the clip, slow it down and alter the pitch. The sound effects are surprisingly limited: there's a robot voice, a helium voice, trumpet, whistling, etc.

DS Sound does not feel robust, and honestly, it's a feature I can only see appealing to those who have not grown tired of turning sound clips into Chipmunk music. While the DSi Camera did have me doodling, DSi Sound didn't exactly have me noodling.

Sure, the SD card slot is to future-proof the DSi, but right now, I can't help but thinking I'm better off with a GBA slot.



This is not the first article I have read stating that the sound capabilities of the DSi are meager at best. Its like Nintendo does not want you to use the DSi as a serious mp3 player, just to mess around with.

I didn't think it was going to be all that great anyways. It's supposed to be all about experimentation. It will probably keep me interested for a few days, then I'll move on and look at the other parts of the DSi.

Then again, I'd like to try it out for myself before I say anything concrete.

So the new sound system is gonna be kinda below par... or at least that's the reviewer's concept on it... I look forward to a more... hands on aspect.

Wow...I'm still far from impressed... It seems like all the new handhelds are turning into the same things...All Nintendo would have to do is fix the sound and add messaging/calling and you would have the iPhone...

i like the ideas i mean there kool but wuts the point to them, to entertain, i mean u should be playing the games u have not with ur voice thats the point to Electro Plankton

You'd think they give you a little more variety. This stinks.... It would be cool if they had weekly updates for new sound options or maybe even downloads for your SD Card.

I guess this is all nintendo can come with.

thats ashame, i would of thought that it would be really interesting, i would of thought they will enhance it but since they are already selling them its a shame
