Afrer the success of SMB1, Nintendo decided to follow it up with a sequel, called SMB 2...
however, they felt it was too diificult, and neved released it for the NES in America.
But they already had a game for the FAMICOM(the Japanese NES), called Dream Factoryoki Doki Panic, in which a brother and sister are sent to a dream world...their pet monkey escapes, and soon finds a husband and wife, tells them what happened, and they go in after the brother and sister.
This is soon re-done, with the cavalcade of Mario characters, Mario is the husband, Luigi is the sister, Toad is the brother, and Princess Toadstool(pretty sure; check "The Mushroom Kingdom" website...I don't know URL, sorry).
The similarities between Doki Doki and SMB 2(US), aren't many, but the starman, mushroom and bomb were in DDP...

As for SMB 2(japan)...it was retitled, and later released in Super Mario Allstars, under the title: Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.
