Retro Moment: What is Paper Mario?



Paper Mario was an RPG made for the Nintendo 64. It featured a 2-D version of our favorite plumber going on a quest to defeat Bowser. Along the way, many allies join him on his quest and together they defeat Bowser. This particular game was a Turn-Based RPG (Role Playing Game).

Super Paper Mario bends the rules a little bit. The Turn-Based style that made this series famous has been removed. Much more has been changed in this game and it will be explained in this review.

Gameplay

The gameplay is one of the best parts of the game. The storyline is what affects the gameplay the most. The storyline has depth to it and has great irony, which often happens in the Paper Mario series. There are plenty of puzzles and plenty of tricks, which make a great game. The gameplay is great by my standards, but could use a little more to it. Such as harder levels? This game was way too easy to complete. I don't think I died ONCE while playing it through.

Gameplay - 9/10 - I was impressed. The usual Paper Mario features return in this game. If it were a little harder, that would've helped.

Controls

The controls are incredibly basic. Pretend that you are playing Super Mario Bros for the NES using the Wii Remote. Well, you could play Super Paper Mario with the same control style. Just hold the Wii Remote sideways and push 2 to jump, 1 to use your Pixl (special characters you meet along your quest that give you special powers) and the Control Pad to run. Other controls are necessary for a characters special skills.

Controls - 9.5/10 - Very easy controls. They were comfortable to use and easy to remember.

Graphics

The graphics can't really be rated much. They are 2-D graphics. Wait, you say that there is 3-D too? I guess I forgot.


3-D. Didn't expect that, did you?

The graphics are basic. They are basically something you could make on Paint. Just make lines, dump areas with color, and you have Paper Mario. The graphics were alright, but for Wii standards, and how basic the graphics are, they could have been better.

Graphics - 8/10 - Overall, nice. Touching them up isn't out of the question.

Sound/Music

The sounds were nice. Regular, classic Paper Mario sounds. New music that seemed a little techno. It was pretty neat. Each world had different music that in a way, greeted you in a pleasant way. The sounds were pretty clear, as well. Overall, pretty great.

Sounds - 9.5/10 - Nothing's perfect.
Music - 8.5/10 - Needed a little more variety, but I enjoyed listening to the tunes.

Replay Value

Once you beat this game, there isn't really a reason to play it through again. Unless you want to look for clues as to why everything happened. This game doesn't have a high replay value, but it wouldn't kill you to go through it again.

Replay Value - 6/10 - Not many reasons to play it through again.

Overall

8.5/10

This game has ups and downs like every game, but what really hit me hard was the fact that the game was too easy. If Super Paper Mario were harder, I would've increased the score.
