How do you unlock big plays?

You get Big Plays by playing on wi-fi against other people and making, well... Big Plays. Also, you can think of them as special requirements during a match. Every four Big Plays you get, you receive a special gift in the single player game.

oh dang. thats hard. can you do that with friends, too or is it only for random match-ups?

You can get "Big Plays" with friend battles AND with random match-ups.
