I put them on the same layers and smudge them together. Then I add some black to make it look a little dark in the middle.

Try

Apply Image>Filters>Noise>Reduce noise

or

Apply Image>Filters>Stylize>Diffuse>Anisotropic and lower the opacity of layer to mid-low amounts. Following with light applied image sharpen.

creates nice texture in your tags
and smooths noisy stuff out
